<description>Conflicts of interest occur when there is a conflict between a councillor's public duty and their private interests. One of the many challenges facing councillors is in dealing with potential conflicts that may arise between serving the overall public interest of the community and their own private or business interests. There is a clear and unequivocal requirement that councillors not gain any financial or personal advantage from holding office.
